Facebook x Samaritans of Singapore

To improve Facebook’s efforts to detect at-risk/suicidal users, we adapted the existing and all-familiar ‘See Translation’ button and turned it into a subtle but crucial tool to empower early detection and intervention.

Through an algorithm that identifies word choices and styles of writing found to hint at depression, people within an affected individual’s network will be shown a ‘See Translation’ button alongside each post. Clicking it reveals why the post was flagged, along with information on suggested next steps will be provided.
